As you walk into the Muskellounge on Monona Drive, arguably a busy bustling street, you feel immediately transported to a woodsy bar up north. An incredibly cozy, wood paneled bar popped up in a completely non-descript strip mall bordering Madison and Monona and we loved all of it. Like, genuinely can’t wait to return to enjoy the cozy atmosphere, because winters in Wisconsin are horrendous, kind of love. That really says something, a place that you are willing to leave your home for in the dead of winter because you know that it will be so lovely.
This place is definitely a bar’s bar. You walk in, grab an available table (for us preferably a corner away from people where we can obnoxiously set up our cameras without bothering folks) and then head up to the bar and start ordering all of the fun things available. The bartenders could not have been more lovely. Even going so far as to dig in back for extra beers we were hoping to try.
But the bar itself and ascetics aside, the real meat and potatoes of this joint are the fabulous array of drink options for the Mock and Cock of your lives. We adore how inclusive this place was. The same menu for everyone, a wide variety of options for everyone. Muskellounge serves at least 5 different NA beers, including a couple of IPAs that Katy loves, despite her constant claims of disdain. Several NA cocktails on the menu as well! They also had an Old Fashioned on tap and a Frozen Margarita machine. We loved everything we drank. There is something to say for a freshly muddled Old Fashioned, but we loved the ingenuity here, and we’re sure it’s a fabulous feature on a busy Friday night in Wisconsin.
After we had tasted several of the wonderful beverages, we took the opportunity to order the entire food menu. The cutest tackle box charcuterie board you could dream up, a delicious soft pretzel with dipping sauces and a perfect frozen pizza rounded up our snacking. The food is never why we’re at a spot, but it is always important for us to let folks know what’s available to them when they go. Like for instance, they have a beautiful shuffle board against the wall in the main room and a Big Buck Hunter in the back with other fun games to play!
We loved our visit and we’ll continue to tell all of our friends to head to Muskellounge when they get the chance.
