Your Dry January (or any other time) Toolbox
Heya friends! Katy here 👋
In this article I am going to share a few of my sobriety tools with you. By “tools” I mean apps, books, podcasts, articles, meditations, journal prompts, etc. that helped me GET sober and stay that way for almost 500 days now.
Take what speaks to you and leave the rest; which is good advice for just about anything these days. Just because it worked for me may not mean it will for you, however, do your best to keep an open mind for me, k?
If you have questions, suggestions or something I can share here, please shoot me a message!
1. Apps
Oh so many apps. Here's a list of the ones I use in active sobriety:
I AM SOBER
Sober days counter. We have a Mocks & Cocks Community if you want to join!
STREAKS
Goal Tracker. I use it for meditation minutes, taking my vitamins, yoga poses/minutes
OMVANA
Guided meditations and music
8. Quit Lit
The term QUIT LIT refers to literature/books written by those that have quit drinking/in recovery. You don’t have to be on a complete sobriety journey to enjoy a good memoir. The following are books that I have enjoyed over the years. Some are science-y, others are funny, others, not so much. If you’re trying to soak up some time in the evenings, these might help!
7. Podcasts
We would be remiss if we failed to shamelessly plug our newest and most ridiculous venture yet. The Happiest of Hours podcast where Bridget and I share our “mission to discover, create and share the best products and places for mocktails and cocktails while creating a space, both in person and online, where drinkers and non-drinkers alike can coexist regardless of what's in their glass.” How’s that for an elevator pitch? She drops on January 1st, 2023. You should subscribe.
Here are some of our favorite podcasts:
The Happiest of Hours by Mocks & Cocks
Over the Influence
Smartless
Especially the Bradley Cooper episode
Without Compromise by Athletic Brewing Company
6. Journals
Why Journal?
Well, for starters, there are SO many gorgeous journals and notebooks out there. If that's not reason enough, there are so many benefits to privately journaling. There's no wrong way to do it, so that's awesome. But just getting our thoughts out of our heads and on to paper quiets your mind.
5. Water Ritual
Cold shower or hot bath? We say both.
Cold showers can help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve circulation, lower stress levels, and reduce muscle soreness and fatigue.
Bathing can diminish feelings of depression and pessimism because baths give you a wonderful combination of isolation, quiet, and comfort.
4. H2O
Drink water.
Not thirsty?
Drink water.
Sore?
Drink water.
Hungry?
Drink water
Headache?
Drink water.
Tired?
Drink water.
You get the idea.
Drink your fucking water.
4. Aromatherapy
2. Alcohol-Free Options
This is obviously our biggest and brightest tool and we’ve made our very own Favorite Things post for just this.
Give us ALL the alcohol-free options; non-alcoholic beer, zero proof spirits, boozeless bubbly, all the seltzer waters, club soda with limes...all of it.
